The difference between the cast and crew is that the cast are the actors playing the roles in the production/ film. The crew are the people who take the photos, film the scenes and do all the work on set.

What is the purpose of taking headshots of cast and crew?

Taking headshots of the cast can be for the audience so they know who is starring in the film. It personalises the press release so the audience feel like they can get up close to the actors and get to know them.

Taking headshots of the crew is usually for professional reasons so that the press know who has worked on all aspects of the film from directors, producers, lighting, music composers, and film photographers. It also shows previous films they have been involved in.

The process of headshots

The room was set up with different lights to capture the shots in portrait. We used 2 light boxes and 2 LED lights with a greenscreen in the background. The person having their head shot taken needed to stand on yellow T bar strip on the floor to be in the correct position. The subject needed to stand at a slight angle but looking forward, eyes open and smiling. I don't like having my photo taken so I found this difficult particularly looking straight into the camera and keeping my eyes open for the shot. Some photos came out blurry so we had to retake them.

The camera was set up using RAW which is a type of file that is easier to edit. RAW files also are of a higher quality.

  1. Use a stills camera and set to RAW which makes editing easier (as because

  2. Find a suitable room with the correct backdrop

  3. Adjust lighting so that subject was high key lit

  4. Ask subject to take off jackets and relax

  5. Looking through the viewfinder make sure subject is in the frame and not cut-off

  6. Portrait usually works better for head shots

  7. Ask them to stand side-on, smile and look straight at the camera

  8. Check images are not blurry using the thumbnail button
